CONVERT WORD DOCS TO CLEAN HTML

word to htmlDo you want to paste the contents of a Word document in one of your Luminis pages?
Are you frustrated that you have to paste as plain text and then reformat everything (bullets, bold text, links, etc) in Luminis?

Give this a try:
Convert Word Documents to Clean HTML

Just paste the contents of your Word document into the this converter and it will spit out clean HTML to then copy and paste in the source view of your Luminis page.

It may work perfect for you, or it may need a few tweaks after it is in Luminis, but either way it should save you a lot of work with reformatting.

Another option is, of course, to convert your Word document to a .pdf file, import the .pdf file and then simply link to it.

Your call on which option you want to use.

CHECK YOUR MICROSOFT OFFICE 2010 FILES FOR ACCESSIBILITY

Microsoft Office 2010 includes a new tool for Word, Excel and PowerPoint called the Accessibility Checker, which you can use to check your document for any issues that might make it challenging for a user with a disability. To learn more, see Accessibility Checker.

URL SHORTENER

If you are wanting to link to something that has a very long URL (in the hundreds of characters) this may cause an issue with Luminis.  The Luminis linking action tends to break when extremely long URL's are used as links.  To get around this Luminis limitation, we recommend the use of a URL shortener.

google url shortener

You can use Google's URL Shortener here:  http://goo.gl

Just paste your long URL in the field and click the "Shorten" button.  It will generate a short URL for you to use instead of the long one.  The URL is displayed to the right of the "Shorten" button.  Just copy this and use it as the URL in Luminis.

You can login when you create short URL's and it will save them in your account for you to reference later.

ATTENTION:
If you have recently downloaded and installed the new version of Java, you may see this Security warning when trying to open the editor:

java security concern

You will want to click the 'No' button when you see this Security box.

If you have already clicked 'Yes', restart your browser, log back into Luminis and try editing the page again and then click 'No' this time when the Security Warning box comes up.

What is SCT Luminis?

SCT Luminis is SIUE's content management system for web pages.

Luminis is completely web based.  All Luminis site changes/updates will be done through your web browser (Internet Explorer on a PC only).

If you want to move your department's website into the Luminis CMS, click on the "Getting Started" link in the upper right column.  No HTML knowledge is required to update your Luminis pages.  However, a two-hour training session is required before you can begin updating your Luminis pages.  That's it!

NOTE:  DO NOT USE LUMINIS ON A MAC!  YOU WILL LOSE DATA!  The Mac platform is currently NOT supported in Luminis.  Luminis is currently only supported on a PC using Internet Explorer.

Luminis Tips and Tricks

  • If you are having problems with pages loading properly within Luminis...Log out of Luminis and log back in.  If that doesn't work properly, you may need to restart your browser.
  • DO NOT delete old versions of documents.
  • Make sure files are not marked as "Checked Out" after you are finished with them. Otherwise, files that are "Checked Out" cannot be opened and edited by anyone until the checkout is cancelled.
  • If you are working in Luminis and you go to lunch, have to attend a meeting, are going home for the day, etc...please save your work and logout of the system. Luminis has a timeout setting and will kick you out after a set amount of idle time and the files you had open will remain checked out.
  • If you are having trouble changing font styles, clean the style with the clean style button.
  • IMPORTANT:  If you are pasting text into the WYSIWYG editor, always use the "Paste as Plain Text" option found in the 'Edit' pulldown within the WYSIWYG editor.
  • IMPORTANT:  When inserting bookmarks, DO NOT USE NUMBERS.  If you want to label a bookmark with a number, you MUST spell out the number as a word ('seven' instead of '7').  Using numbers in bookmarks will cause an error and you will not be able to edit that page.
  • TO SINGLE SPACE:  click 'SHIFT' + 'ENTER'.
  • When importing an image, pdf, etc... and before placing it on a page, always submit the image, pdf, etc. right away.  This will help avoid any issues with images not showing up on submitted pages.
