URCA AWARDS

Congratulations to the winners of the Spring 2014 URCA Assistant Program Awards!!

Vaughn Vandegrift URCA Assistant Research Mentor of the Semester Award

Sarah Luesse

Dr. Sarah Luesse,  Department of Chemistry

Nominated by: Chante Summers

"I have never met someone as hard working as Dr. Luesse...Dr. Luesse provides key insight into Chemistry with the vast amount of knowledge she has gained from her experiences in academia and industry. Being a mentor isn’t in the job description of a professor. It isn’t even in the job description for research. However, she does so with vigor and grace. There is not a moment where Dr. Luesse [doesn't] willingly gives up her time to sit down and discuss science or to step in the lab and inquire about progress. She is constantly gifting her time and wisdom to various fields...Dr. Luesse has more than exceeded expectations by creating a learning, safe, and creative environment for her students to explore the areas of research."

URCA Creative Activities Mentor of the Semester

Justin Sutters

Dr. Justin Sutters, Art & Design

Nominated by: Keirsten Savering

"[Dr. Justin Sutters] has...done a fantastic job in assisting me with my own research and teaching me advanced research methods...he has gone above and beyond in his assistance to better my research methodology for my student teaching placement next semester.
Even though Dr. Sutters has only been with the art education program for less than two years, he has surely proven his worth and dedication to the field through research and practice. With his inclusion to the URCA research program, Dr. Sutters is an asset to art education research and excellence at SIUE."

URCA Research Assistant of the Semester Award

Kelsey Stout

Kelsey Stout, Kinesiology and Health Education

Nominated by: Dr. Josh Wooten

"From the day Kelsey began her research assistantship, she was an extremely hard working student and immediately became involved in almost every aspect of our research projects. Kelsey’s project focused the effects of high-fructose consumption during weight-loss on hepatic lipid metabolism. Based on her work, I believe that she has demonstrated her ability to conduct and complete research. She was always prepared prior to all meetings and demonstrated both leadership and teamwork qualities when working in the laboratory. Based on Kelsey’s work as a research assistant, I believe that she has demonstrated herself to be one of the top research assistants in the URCA program."

URCA Creative Activities Assistant of the Semester Award

Carl Wingbermuehle

Carl Wingbermuehle, Art & Design

Nominated by: Mr. Brigham Dimick

"Carl has been an invaluable addition to my studio practice. In fact, he has been instrumental in making my first experience with an assistant after over thirty years of creative activities an exceptional one.

From the beginning of our collaboration this semester, Carl’s energy and focus have remained at a high level. Activities in an artist’s studio run the gamut between menial tasks to explorations of complex forms. Carl has embraced everything asked of him, from painting walls and vacuuming to more specialized, studio-specific activities. He is punctual, has a very positive attitude, and is receptive to direction and criticism without defensiveness."
