Undergraduate Research Academy

Undergraduate Research Academy Main Navigation

The Undergraduate Research Academy at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville allows students to engage in a research project or creative endeavor under the guidance of a faculty mentor for two consecutive semesters. Students receive the support of their departments and other resources on campus, a budget of up to $800, a personal monetary award, and tuition assistance.

The program is an excellent opportunity for students to explore in-depth research or creative processes at a level that is usually not available to them in their undergraduate studies. In turn, these scholars will often parlay their experiences from the URA into the graduate level or into a real work environment.

Students who participate in the Undergraduate Research Academy develop problem-solving mechanisms, an ability to network with others in and outside their disciplines, grant-writing experience, and presentation and communication skills. Many of the URA scholars participate and present on their innovative research and creative endeavors at regional, national, and international conferences.
