The Permanent Collection is the collection to which objects are assigned by default if there is not a good reason to assign them to some other collection. The first object assigned to this collection is the portrait of Abraham Lincoln by Alban Jasper Conant, which carries accession number 1959.0001. Among the objects that came from the Department of Art & Design were several prints that were purchased at auction at the time that John Kennedy was assassinated in 1963; since the voucher for payment was dated in January of 1964, they carry numbers 1964.0001 through 1964.0008.
