SIUE Faculty Senate Welfare Council
Meeting on February 21, 2008
Meeting convened at 2:30 pm
Present: Allison Fahsl, Edmund Hershberger, Laurie Puchner, Lisa Welch, and Tian Yu
1. Announcements: Puchner provided update on the Ombuds search. Candidate selected and informed. Approval pending from the Senate
2. Consideration of January 17 minutes: approved with amendments
3. Action Items
• Emeritus/retired faculty policy:
Welch updated the council on the discussion by the Faculty Benefits and Facilities Committee and provided a copy of the resulted “Proposed Policy for Retired and Emeriti Faculty Members” to council members. Council discussed the proposal. Changes were made regarding priority consideration given to emeriti faculty and the definition of immediate family members. Amended proposal approved.
• Grievance policy
Puchner updated council members about the discussion of Grievance Policy Working Group. Council discussed the revised proposal. Discussion focused on issues related “Grievable Matters” and “Membership Composition.” No decision made by the council. Puchner will take the discussion to the Senate Executive Committee.
4. Standing Committee Report
• Faculty Benefits and Facilities Committee
Welch asked FAFC members to review Inclement Weather Policy. Copy of the policy distributed
5. Old Business:
Revisions to Sabbatical Guidelines
Discussion was focused on issues pertinent to eligibility, sabbatical awarding methods, and deferment. Council objected a suggestion from the Assistant Provost about eligibility. The third ( c ) method for awarding sabbatical leave was dropped. On deferment, Council concurred that “deferment should be limited to no more than 12 months.”
Sabbatical Leave Policy was approved with amendments
6. New Business: Ombuds Evaluation
“Faculty Ombuds Service Questionnaire” was reviewed. Question 8 was
changed to “When you contacted the Ombuds person, getting the response was”
Questionnaire approved with amendments.
