FAQ's

Below are a few of the most commonly asked questions about SOAR. If there is a question you have that is still unanswered, please call us at (618) 650 - 3790 or stop by our office in the Student Success Center, Suite 1260 (enter via the Academic Advancement Center, Suite 1220).

What are your office hours?

Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

How do I get into SOAR?

If you qualify for our program as described in in the Qualifying section, go to the Applying section on our home page and complete the application. Once you have completed the application, please submit it to the SOAR office, which is located in the Student Success Center, Suite 1260.

How do I get tutoring for my classes?

Simply enter the Academic Advancement Center via Suite 1220 and sign on for tutoring at the Sign-In computer located in the Math Resource Area.

How often do I have to attend tutoring?

As a FAME, GAME, or SOAR student you should be attending tutoring on a weekly basis. FAME, GAME, and SOAR students are required to attend tutoring, five (5) hours per week. Note: If you are receiving an A or B in a course after Midterm grades come out, you may be exempt from tutoring for that class.

What is Project GAME?

Project GAME stands for Goal-Oriented African American Males Excel. It is a two semester program comprised of 20 African American male students who are first-semester freshmen at SIUE. The goal of Project GAME is to help African American males succeed academically, professionally, and personally at the university. What is Project FAME?

Project FAME stands for Females of African-descent Modeling Excellence. It is a two semester program comprised of 20 African American female students who are first-semester freshmen at SIUE. The goal of Project FAME is to help African American females succeed academically, professionally, and personally at the university. How/When should I make an appointment to be advised for next semester?

Generally, we begin making appointments for SOAR students the third week of the semester. We then begin advising for SOAR students the fourth week. Once your classes for the new semester begin, it's time to start thinking of the upcoming semester(s) and preparing yourself for your next advisement appointment. Go to the Academic Advising informational page for more information.

How/When should I declare?

You may be eligible to declare as long as you have completed all of your departmental requirements. To declare, you must make an appointment with your advisor.

What is your mentoring program?

The SOAR Mentoring Program provides peer support for participants of the SOAR Program starting freshman year, which establishes a positive and meaningful relationship with a more experienced student. If you are interested in becoming part of our Mentoring program as either a Mentor or Protégé, please contact Dr. Earleen Patterson by phone at (618) 650 - 3790 or stop by the Student Success Center, Suite 1260.
