Introduction

The materials included in or referenced through this document provide access or reference to the policies governing the general operations of the University. Some procedural statements are included, generally when the procedures are incorporated in a policy document.

Policies included or referenced in this document are those which, generally, meet the following criteria.

  1. The policy has a broad application within the University, for example, the policy is applicable to all members of the University community; is applicable to all students; or is applicable to all members of an employment category such as faculty, professional staff, or civil service.
  2. The policy requires approval of an administrative officer or of a body at the level of the Chancellor or above. Some policies subject, by delegation of authority, to final approval by a Vice Chancellor are included because of the nature of the material addressed by the policy.
  3. The policy is not one that is generally available or widely distributed through other publications such as pamphlets, employee handbooks, and the like.
  4. The policy addresses a subject matter important to the administration, management, or operation of the University.
In general, policies that are established and that operate internal to a unit are excluded from this document. Such policies would include, for example, the internal policies of a school or college, an academic department, a facility, or a service operation.

The inadvertent omission of approved policy which meets the criteria above does not effect the status of the policy.

Policy Creation, Revision, Enactment and Implementation

In accordance with the SIUE Policy Development and Implementation Policy, all newly created and revised SIUE University-wide policies and procedures must be reviewed by the SIUE Policy Council. "The Policy Development and Implementation Policy provides a standardized and centralized process under which a proposed policy may be initiated, developed, reviewed, approved, implemented and disseminated in accordance with applicable standards of SIUE."
