My current practice site is with Places for People in St. Louis. This is also a practice site for Saint Louis University psychiatry residents. It is a not-for-profit community mental health center with core values that include providing innovative and effective mental health services to the underserved in the greater St. Louis region. The client population includes the chronically homeless, those with severe and persistent mental illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), substance abusers, refugee and torture-victim survivors, and individuals with mental illnesses and co-occurring HIV. I work collaboratively with psychiatry and social work services and have developed a practice site that incorporates a clinical pharmacist into the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams. The majority of my clinical time is spent providing medication management and disease-state education to clients in the community, on the streets of St. Louis and at their places of residence. This rotation site provides a unique treatment environment for SIUE APPE students to expand upon their clinical pharmacy skills, utilize the art of empathetic listening, and understand the meaning and practice of patient-centered care in the mental health recovery process.Scholarship and representative publications
