For the first time in 38 years, alumna Sophia Kioleidou-Stonkidou returned to the SIUE campus. As a student from 1972 to 1974 in the School of Nursing's baccalaureate program, Sophia excelled, completing the program in just two years. Satisfied with her accomplishments, Sophia is very proud to be an alumna of SIUE and the School of Nursing.

Prior to studying in the United States, Sophia was a diploma nurse in Xanthi, Greece, where she was born and raised. In 1966, she spent a year studying anesthesiology at Coventry in the English Midlands, an area comprising central England. After a year of practicing, Sophia returned to Greece to provide anesthesia care for her county, working as a nurse in ophthalmology, surgery and in the operating room.

In 1972, Sophia received a scholarship to study in the United States and chose to attend SIUE. In 1973 during the course of her SIUE education, Sophia was recognized in "Who's Who Among Students in the United States", an honor in which she is still proud.

In August of 1974, she returned to her position in Greece as head nurse for ophthalmology and surgery. Upon her return, she was the only baccalaureate prepared nurses in Xanthi and in Northern Greece. Sophia was promoted to nursing director in 1979, where she served until retirement in 1985.

Sophia is a pioneer in her field, insisting on advancing her career and refusing to accept limitations. She is delighted to teach others what she had learned through her work.
