Greetings Safe Zone Members!
We hope the semester is ending well for each of you. Below are some important updates from the spring semester and important information regarding some of our summer projects. Please let us know if you have any questions.
We are excited to announce that Jamie Matthews will be steeping into the staff co-chair role this fall! Jamie is currently the Assistant Director for the Morris University Center and will bring new energy and a great skill set to the co-chair role. Congratulations Jamie!
SIUE Safe Zone is pleased to announce that we will be participating in the St. Louis Pride Festival and Parade, Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28. SIUE will once again host an informational booth and will also walk in the parade. We are looking for SIUE volunteers to help staff the booth and/or walk in the parade. Please click the following links to volunteer for the activity/times that work for you. We welcome all current and past SIUE students, staff, and faculty!

We are currently working with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion to submit updates to the Campus Pride Climate Index. This year marks the first time we will be getting results from a new and improved climate index, which has improved on its inclusions of the transgender community. The new index is also far more thorough and requests a lot more supporting material. Campus Pride made these changes to address the number of overinflated scores. With these changes in mind we do expect to see our score drop. This should serve as a reminder that while we have done great work over the past few year, we still have a lot more work to do to ensure that our campus is a safe and engaging home to all members of the LGBTQQIA community.
Over the summer we will be looking for volunteers to help kick off our long awaited mentorship program. Stay tuned for more details.
SIUE Counseling and Health Services is in the process of applying for a grant to increase awareness of suicide risk and prevention on campus. Safe Zone has signed on to support and advise this project specifically on outreach, prevention, and support of the LGBTQQIA community should SIUE be awarded the grant.
As many of you know we were unfortunately unable to host the 2nd annual Safe Zone trivia night this year. I do want to thank all of the folks who worked very hard behind the scenes to try to get this program together. We are still interested in doing a trivia night in the future, but we are also looking for other suggestions on how we can raise money for our scholarship fund. If you have any suggestions please contact Marie Klopfenstein at email@example.com.
Camp Pride: Advisor Boot Camp
Safe Zone is continuing its support of Camp Pride by sending Maureen Bell-Werner the new GSA Advisor and Assistant Director for First-Year Services with Academic Advising to Camp Pride this July. Due to travel costs this year we are only sending one person.
We Are One Grant! The MUC is sponsoring 4 grants of $250 each fiscal year (July-June). Preference for grant dollars will be given to programs that have an educational component with an emphasis on developing learning and understanding for issues related to the GLBT community. A review of each grant will be performed by representatives from the University Center, Safe Zone Committee, and Kimmel Student Involvement Center with final approval by the Director of the University Center. For more information contact Safe Zone Co-Chair Rex Jackson at 618-650-4627 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
