Traveling Outside the U.S.

If you will be traveling home and then returning to the United States to resume your degree program, you must take the following required documents and request a travel signature from your International Student Adviser.


Required Documents

  • Passport
    Your passport must be valid at least six months into the future at all times, especially upon initial entry or re-entry to the U.S.
  • U.S. Entry Visa
    The visa stamp in your passport should be valid on the date of your return to the U.S.
  • I-20 for F-1 Students
    Before your departure from the U.S., make sure that you have an unexpired travel signature from an International Student Adviser on page 3 of your I-20. This signature on the I-20 is valid for six months. It is important to plan ahead and get your travel signature several weeks before you depart the U.S.
  • DS-2019 for J-1 Students and Scholars
    Before your departure from the U.S., make sure that you have an unexpired travel signature from an International Student Adviser on your DS-2019. This signature on the DS-2019 is valid for six months. It is important to plan ahead and get your travel signature several weeks before you depart the U.S.


Travel to Canada, Mexico or Other Countries

Other countries may require a Visa prior to entering the country. Before your departure, contact the nearest consulate or embassy of the country(ies) you plan to visit for updated information.
