Extending Your I-20/DS-2019

If you are not able to finish your degree program by the end date noted on your I-20 (F-1) or DS 2019 (J-1), you can request an extension of your program. The length of time allowed for an extension is based on the recommendation of your academic adviser. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) will not be approved once an I-20 extension is granted.

Deadline for Extensions

An extension of your I-20 or DS-2019 must be completed 60 days before the end date of the document. If your I-20 or DS-2019 expires while you are still a student, you will be considered in violation of your status.

Application Instructions

  1. Complete Student Request for I-20/DS-2019 Extension Form
  2. Complete Academic/Faculty Advisor Recommendation Form for I-20/DS-2019 extension
  3. Provide an original bank statement providing proof of funding for additional semesters. The amount will be determined by the International Advisor
  4. Complete International Student Financial Form if family or other individuals are contributing to your education
  5. Turn in complete packet to the Office of International Affairs. An International Advisor will contact you regarding your application within 4 business days.

Change of Academic Level

Undergraduate to Graduate

If you need an extension because you are changing academic levels from an undergraduate to a graduate program, you must submit an admission letter for your new program to the SIUE Office of International Affairs. An International Advisor will contact you regarding your new I-20 (F-1) or DS 2019 (J-1) within 4 business days.
