Immigration regulations require international students in F-1 or J-1 status to register for and complete a full course load each semester (with exceptions of summer) during academic program. Students who drop below full course load without International Student Adviser approval will be reported to SEVIS, your SEVIS record will be terminated, and you will lose your lawful F-1 or J-1 status including F-1 and J-1 employment eligibility and benefits. For immigration purposes, full-time enrollment is defined as:
Graduate students cannot go below 6 credit hours, unless in their last semester.
At the beginning of each term the International Adviser is required by law to submit class registration electronically to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through SEVIS that all international students are maintaining full course load.
