The Southern Illinois University System is conducting a search for the position of University Architect. The preferred location of the position is Carbondale.

Southern Illinois University consists of two main campuses - Southern Illinois University Carbondale (with a School of Medicine in Springfield and a School of Law in Carbondale) and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (with a School of Dental Medicine in Alton, a School of Pharmacy in Edwardsville, and a Center in East St. Louis).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with campus architectural staffs as they develop plans for major capital projects (over $500,000) to review and understand planning decisions.
  • Monitor the campuses’ progress in completing designated deferred maintenance and infrastructure improvements as determined by their five-year plans.
  • Report to the President periodically on the progress of plan development for major campus projects and on the progress of completing the campuses’ five-year plans.
  • Respond, through the President, to questions about capital projects from the Board of Trustees and share progress reports with the Board.
  • Offer advice, as appropriate, to campus architectural and engineering staff on design concepts and architectural and design concerns expressed by the President and the Board of Trustees.
  • Other assignments as determined by the President and the Board of Trustees.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering or similar field.
  • Certificate of registration as a State of Illinois licensed architect.
  • Ten years of responsible planning and designing of major structures.
  • Five years supervisory experience as a project architect with demonstrated experience in managing or participating in large multi-component developments that delivered completed buildings and site development on time and within budget.
  • Computer literacy sufficient to adapt to campuses’ computer system usage.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communications skills.
  • Strong written communication skills to prepare clear, concise and professional reports and correspondence.
  • Working knowledge of current project and construction costs and experience with industry standard cost estimating systems.
  • Ability and knowledge to provide technical advice on construction practices, methods and procedures and the preparation of drawings and specifications for major building projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in architecture, engineering or similar field.
  • Experience in the planning and design of architectural projects at Illinois public universities.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
