Graduating approximately 50 exceptionally well-prepared dentists each year, the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine plays a critical role as a primary oral health care provider for our region. Since opening in 1972, the School has trained more than 1,500 dentists; 70 percent of whom practice in Illinois and the St. Louis Metro Area.

As the only dental school clinic in Illinois outside of Chicago and the only dental school within 250 miles of St. Louis, the School provides vital access to oral health care for the people of Southern Illinois. Each year, students manage more than 30,000 visits for more than 8,000 patients in the School's dental clinics and offer oral health treatments, screenings and education to more than 10,000 people annually through community outreach. Many people who turn to us have no other options for receiving dental care. Nearly 30 percent of our patients are covered by Medicaid, which many dentists will not accept as payment for service.

Private resources will allow the School to continue to build on its national reputation for excellence in dental education and maintain our critical patient services for the regional community. Private support promises to promote not only the School of Dental Medicine, but also the entire profession of dentistry and the public that we are privileged to serve.
