Counseling Groups

When you arrive at the Counseling & Health Services reception area for group, please inform the SIUE employee at the front desk that you are there for one of the groups and then wait in the reception area. The facilitator will come and get you when the group is ready to begin.

If you have any questions, would like more information, or need to set up a group screening please call 618-650-2842 and press 1. A group screening is a confidential meeting between you and the group facilitator to determine if the group is a good fit for you.

Survivors of Silence - Megan Denton, M.A., Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor


  • This is a support group for male and female survivors of sexual violence.
  • The group focuses on providing support, empathy and insight from other survivors, developing healthy coping skills, fostering a sense of empowerment and helping members to regain a sense of control and safety within their lives.
  • Those interested in group membership will be required to attend a group screening.
  • Please call our office (618-650-2842) to schedule a group screening with a counselor.
  • Meets every week for 90 minutes in the Counseling & Health Services Conference room.

Understanding Myself & Others - Kristin Miserocchi, Ph.D., Post-doctoral Counselor & Shelby Zurick, B.S., Practium Student


  • This is an interpersonal process group focused on any issue impacting one's relationships with others.
  • A wide variety of presenting concerns are appropriate for this group, including relationship problems, problems with emotional expressiveness, family of origin issues, general isolation or disconnectedness, social anxiety, identity concerns, and adjustment issues.
  • This group can help you improve your interpersonal skills, gain awareness of social dynamics, increase emotional intelligence and expressiveness, and learn more about yourself in relation to others.
  • This group will provide you with a safe space to explore feelings and thoughts related to presenting issues, give and receive support and feedback with others, practice new ways of interacting with others, and form connections with others.

  • This is an open group that meets weekly for 90 minutes and is available for all students. Students are welcome to join any time during the semester.

Open Door - Brad Foltz, Ph.D., Post-doctoral Counselor & Jenny Stanuch, M.M., Practicum Student


  • This is a counseling support group for LGBTQ students at SIUE.
  • The "Open Door" group emphasizes the development of a safe and supportive environment for students to explore and share their experiences with identity, coming out, building community, spirituality and religion, family, developing relationships, and other topics that group members feel they could use support.
  • This group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 2:00p.

Powerful Minds - Holly Pirtle, M.A., Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor


  • This is a counseling group for enrolled SIUE students seeking to understand and harness their brainpower, improve their mood, and increase effectiveness in many parts of their lives.
  • The "Powerful Minds" group emphasizes the process of learning and utilizing strategies to manage negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
  • In this group, students are able to receive support in coping with life stressors, as well as reduce anxiety by learning various relaxation techniques.
  • This group meets weekly on Fridays from 10:00a-11:30a.
  • Group screening is required. Please call our office (618-650-2842) to schedule a group screening with a counselor.


In the past, we have offered a variety of other groups based on student availability and need, including but not limited to, Women of Color Empowerment, among others.
