Prior to joining the SIUE faculty, Dr. Demirer taught Corporate Finance and Investments at the University of Kansas. Dr. Demirer's research interests include investments, asset pricing and risk management.

A research fellow at the Economic Research Forum, Dr. Demirer works on asset pricing and risk management issues in emerging stock markets and commodity markets. His recent research focuses on the issues surrounding market efficiency and asset pricing in a number of emerging and frontier stock markets in Asia and the Middle East. He has recently published in refereed journals including Energy Economics, Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, Emerging Markets Review, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Review of Financial Economics and Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions & Money. Dr. Demirer has given keynote speeches on energy and emerging markets at international conferences as well as in public settings and has served as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous academic journals as well as the National Science Foundation (NSF) Decision, Risk, and Management Science – Economics program.

Dr. Demirer is a member of the Financial Management Association, American Economic Association, U.S. Association for Energy Economics, and Middle East Economic Association
