Bachelor of Science, Major in Computer Management and Information Systems

The Bachelor of Science, major in Computer Management and Information Systems, prepares students for entry into a professional career in business computing. The program provides students the in-depth technical skills needed to work as professionals in management, design, and development of business information systems. Students also learn skills in all business functional areas by completing the general requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Business.

Career Opportunities in Information Systems

The demand for graduates with degree level training leading to jobs in the computing field has been consistently strong for well over a decade. Future projections of employment demand rank the computer area as a top job producing component of the corporate sector of the economy. Demand remains strong for such positions as software engineer, computer programmer, business systems analyst, information systems consultant, information systems project manager, telecommunications network manager, technical writer, and technical support specialist.

Admission, Retention, and Graduation

To be admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems program, students must meet all requirements for admission to the School of Business. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in all business (including CMIS) courses to be retained by and graduate from the CMIS program. Students may be dropped from the program in any of the following circumstances:

  1. A GPA lower than 2.5 in all computing core courses,
  2. A cumulative GPA lower than that required for retention in the School of Business, or
  3. Failure to enroll in courses fulfilling program requirements for three consecutive terms.

For readmission, students must meet the same admission requirements as students entering the program for the first time. To graduate, students must complete the specified program requirements and meet the grade point average and residency requirements of the School of Business.

Course Descriptions, General education and school requirements

CMIS 108-3 COMPUTER CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS. [GENERAL EDUCATION-SKILLS] Computer technology's impact on individuals and our world. Finding and accessing worldwide sources of information; presenting ideas orally, graphically, and in writing. [This course may be waived by completion of an exemption examination due to prior knowledge gained through high school or other courses and through work experience.]

CMIS 342-3 INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR BUSINESS. [SCHOOL OF BUSINESS CORE PROGRAM REQUIREMENT] Information system principles applied to business. Analysis of how computer-based information systems support operational, tactical, and planning decisions. Prerequisite: CMIS 108, Business majors.

Computing Core

CMIS 142-3 VISUAL BASIC.NET PROGRAMMING. The Visual Basic programming language is used to teach business computer programming using a visual programming approach; includes fundamental programming principles for event-driven programming. Prerequisite: CMIS 108 or CS 108 or concurrent enrollment in either of the two courses; and MATH 120 or three years of college preparatory mathematics in high school.

CMIS 230-3 JAVA PROGRAMMING FOR BUSINESS. Application of business problem solving techniques, program design and development, and programming logic dealing with the Java SDK Platform. Students apply logical methods to the design and creation of JAVA programs. Prerequisite: CMIS 142 or a previous course in computer programming.

CMIS 270-3 STRUCTURED SYSTEMS ANALYSIS. Structured tools and techniques are used in business systems analysis and design. Prerequisite: CMIS 108.

CMIS 310-3 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY HARDWARE AND SYSTEMS SOFTWARE. Principles and application of computer hardware and software from theoretical underpinnings to installation and configuration of systems. Hands-on and simulated exercises will be completed to emphasize a real world setting. Prerequisites: CMIS 270, CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 450-3 DATABASE DESIGN. Basic concepts/terminology of relational models with emphasis on current technology and business applications including SQL. Prerequisites: CMIS 270 and CMIS 142 with grade of C or better, CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 468-3 BUSINESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS. Basic concepts and terminology dealing with data communication and distributed systems with emphasis on business applications. May be taken for graduate credit. Prerequisite: CMIS 310, CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 470-3 STRUCTURED SYSTEMS DESIGN. Structured systems design methodologies, including process-oriented, data structure-oriented, and information-oriented techniques. NOT FOR GRADUATE CREDIT. Prerequisite: CMIS 270, 450, CMIS major or specialization.

Computing Electives

CMIS 260-4 COBOL PROGRAMMING. Business-oriented computer programming using listings, computations, comparisons, tables/arrays, files. Students apply logical methods to the design of programs. Prerequisite: CMIS142 or CS 140. NUMEROUS EMPLOYERS OF SIUE STUDENTS REQUIRE THIS COURSE BE TAKEN. STRONGLY ENCOURAGED.

CMIS 300-3 WEB-BASED APPLICATION DESIGN. Analysis, design, and implementation of Internet web-site home pages using current tools of hypertext markup languages, integrated software packages, and specialized web creation software. Prerequisites: CMIS 270, CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 430-3 ADVANCED JAVA PROGRAMMING. Development of applications, applets, and advanced GUI, including advanced object-oriented programming in Java, multithreading, files, multimedia, database use and networking concepts used for applications. Prerequisites: CMIS 230 with grade of C or better, CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 460-3 ASP .NET PROGRAMMING. Advanced event-driven programming, object-oriented programming techniques for on-line Web applications including Web database programming (ADO.NET), security, Web services, and application deployment. Prerequisites: CMIS 142.

CMIS 462-3 UNIX AND SERVER SYSTEMS. UNIX and Windows server operating systems to include scripting language plus server software installation and configuration. May be taken for graduate credit. Prerequisite: CMIS 310, CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 472-3 END USER SYSTEMS SUPPORT. Application of knowledge, skills and abilities necessary in the user support industry to include software and hardware support related to small computer environments as a stand alone or networked setting. Prerequisite: CMIS 342, CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 488-3 to 6 INFORMATION SYSTEMS INTERNSHIP. Application of information systems knowledge in a structured work environment with a written report of the work experience. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours. NOT FOR GRADUATE CREDIT. Prerequisite: Senior standing and consent of instructor, CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 490-3 to 6 INDEPENDENT STUDY IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS. Investigation of topical CMIS area resulting in deliverable unit. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: consent of instructor, chairperson, and program director; CMIS major or specialization.

CMIS 495-3 to 6 SEMINAR: INFORMATION SYSTEMS. Current issues related to business aspects dealing with information systems. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours if topics differ. Prerequisite: consent of instructor, CMIS major or specialization.
