Biography - Dr. Jocelyn DeGroot Brown

Dr. Jocelyn DeGroot earned her Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Ohio University in 2009. Josie's research focuses on interpersonal communication, computer-mediated communication, and communicative issues of death and dying. Her scholarship includes investigations of online voyeurism (Emotional Rubbernecking), Transcorporeal Communication, grief-related blogs, parasocial relationships, and relational continuity with the deceased. She has published in Communication Teacher, Omega: The Journal of Death and Dying, Death Studies, Small Group Research, Communication Research, and has a book chapter in Blogging in the Global Society. Her current research focuses on blogs with counter-narratives, unwanted Facebook behaviors, and death-related communication apprehension. Josie teaches a variety of communication courses, including computer-mediated communication, nonverbal communication, small group communication, and communication theory. Josie also serves as the Graduate Program Director for the department.

A South Dakota native, Josie is fond of flat land and a little bit of snow every now and again. She enjoys watching television and reading the crazy things people post online. Josie and her husband, Derrick Brown, have a dog named Bill Nye and a son with an affinity for Apple products.
