Ceramics & Glass

The ceramics program at SIUE is considered by many to be one of the outstanding clay programs in the country. Well known for its vessel aesthetics, as well as embracing the full range of approaches to the medium, it has attracted outstanding graduate candidates over the past two decades. The ceramics faculty acknowledge their roots in ancient history while striving for new interpretations, challenging the "physicality" of the medium, creating art that speaks of our time and place.

Graduates of the SIUE MFA ceramics program are very active in the field. Many have gone on to become full-time studio artists as well as teachers. SIUE graduates can be found teaching at: University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Tyler School of Art, Kansas City Art Institute, Ewha Womans University (Korea), and University of Missouri Columbia to name a few.

Ceramics and other studio areas in the MFA program recently moved into a five million dollar, state-of-the-art facility on the main SIUE campus. The ceramics studio is generously equipped to accommodate student exploration of the broad range of possibilities within the ceramic arts. The facilities include:

  • 1 on-site Anagama kiln
  • 7 computerized electric kilns
  • 2 large indoor car kilns
  • 2 soda kilns
  • 2 residual salt kilns
  • 1 salt kiln
  • 1 wood fired train kiln
  • 1 wood/soda kiln
  • 1 raku kiln
  • 2 Soldner clay mixers
  • De-airing pugmill
  • Wide variety of treadle and electric potter's wheels
  • Bailey slab roller
  • Enclosed sandblaster
  • Fully stocked glaze area
  • Spraybooth
  • Ball mill

The studio in glassblowing is one of the few remaining locations for this type of study in the central midwest region. The newly equipped facility has a primary focus on beginning to intermediate level glass-blowing, casting and cold-work. Enrollment in these classes is limited to senior level students with prior experience in vessel building.
