Past Earth Week Celebrations


2011 Earth Week

Earth Week 2011 was a fantastic week of educational outreach and entertainment. Events included student presentations, a panel of faculty discussing sustainability, a bluegrass band, Cumberland Gap, planting at The Gardens at SIUE, and a day focused on local businesses.


2010 Earth Day

Events included April 22, 2010 (40th Anniversary of Earth Day):

  • SOS sponsored a "Take Back the Tap" pledge and water bottle exchange
  • 3rd Annual T-Shirts for Trash exchange
  • SOS hosted Cumberland Gap Bluegrass Band

2009 Earth Day:

2009 Earth Day: For the last several years, the week-long series of events celebrating Earth Day represent the University’s commitment to environmental stewardship and leadership.

2009 Earth Day Celebration included:

  • Keynote address of the Illinois State Academy of Science by Dr. Richard Sparks, Director of Research, National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, “Living with Great Rivers: Birth of Civilizations, Contemporary Disasters, and New Approaches.”
  • A town hall meeting on climate change
  •  Roundtable/panel discussion
  •  Tree and shrub planting and educational sessions in The Gardens at SIUE in honor of the 4th Annual Arbor Day Celebration
