SIUE EarthWeek 2013

Tentative Schedule:

Monday April 22

  • Jacqueline Patterson, the director of the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program will be speaking at 3pm in the Goshen Lounge of the Morris University Center at SIUE

  • Student Sustainability Day - "Educate to Eliminate:" Informational tables will be set up throughout the Goshen for student groups, faculty, departments, and administration to inform students about all the opportunities and tools available to them at SIUE in the area of sustainability

  • Clothing Sale - Clothes were donated during a clothing drive and profits from the sales will be donated to develop fish farms in Uganda

  • The band Kentucky Knife Fight (Quad)

  • DIY Workshop - Make your own glass cleaner

Tuesday April 23

  • Chalk the Quad! - Chalking station will be set up all over the quad to allow the student body to chalk about sustainability

  • DIY Workshop - Make your own laundry soap

Wednesday April 24

  • Arts in the Quad - Art, dance, theater, etc. The quad will be donated to the arts for sustainability themed activities

  • DIY Workshop - Make your own general purpose cleaner

Thursday April 25

  • The band Kansas Street Ramblers (Quad)

  • DIY Workshop - Make your own tooth paste

Friday April 26

  • Clothing Sale - Clothes were donated during a clothing drive and profits from the sales will be donated to develop fish farms in Uganda

  • DIY Workshop - Plant your own edible herbs

  • End of semester "Summer of Sustainability" party in the evening with:
    - Aaron Kamm and the One Drops
    - Free food
    - Free Capri Sun juice
    - T-shirt give away

2012 Earth Week

Events for 2012 Earth Week continued the tradition of representing the University's commitment to environmental stewardship and leadership. The week-long events included:

  • Matt Rowland Band
  • A demonstration on natural cleaning solutions
  • Outdoor Recreation Club
  • Aaron Kamm and the One Drops
  • Student Jazz Band
  • Information tables on sustainability-related campus groups
  • A workshop: "Integrating Sustainability into the Collegiate Lifestyle"
  • Volunteer day at the Gardens at SIUE
  • A social for SOS members and associates

2011 Earth Week

Earth Week 2011 was a fantastic week of educational outreach and entertainment. Events included:

  • Student presentations
  • A panel of faculty discussing sustainability
  • A bluegrass band
  • Cumberland Gap,
  • Planting at The Gardens at SIUE
  • A day focused on local businesses.


2010 Earth Day

Events included April 22, 2010 (40th Anniversary of Earth Day):

  • SOS sponsored a "Take Back the Tap" pledge and water bottle exchange
  • 3rd Annual T-Shirts for Trash exchange
  • SOS hosted Cumberland Gap Bluegrass Band

2009 Earth Day Celebration included:

  • Keynote address of the Illinois State Academy of Science by Dr. Richard Sparks, Director of Research, National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, "Living with Great Rivers: Birth of Civilizations, Contemporary Disasters, and New Approaches."
  • A town hall meeting on climate change
  • Roundtable/panel discussion
  • Tree and shrub planting and educational sessions in The Gardens at SIUE in honor of the 4th Annual Arbor Day Celebration
