The costs for most SIUE Study Abroad Programs are generally very comprehensive, including much more than just tuition and living costs. To compare your SIUE costs to study abroad costs, you need to know your comprehensive cost for a semester at SIUE.

Choose a Program that Fits Your Budget

Early in the research stage, students planning to study abroad should consider all aspects of study abroad opportunities, including cost implications in relation to their personal financial situation. The cost of studying abroad varies from program to program. Don't ignore cost when making your decision. Remember there is not a direct correlation between the cost of a program and the quality of your experience abroad. The Office of International Programs encourages students to look accurately and objectively at various financial considerations while choosing a program.

  • What is the total estimated cost for a program? You will find program cost information within each program listed in the program search. Use the Study Abroad Budget Planning Worksheet to help you compare costs across programs. Compare those costs with how much it costs you to live and study at SIUE.

  • What resources are available to help pay for your study abroad experience?

  • SIUE students who qualify for financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Pell Grants, and some SIUE academic merit scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a Study Abroad Program. See the Financial Aid and Scholarships pages for additional information.

  • It is important that you determine how much you feel comfortable spending and how much you are able to borrow. If cost is a major factor, explore less expensive countries or cities, different program types or shorter programs.

Factors Influencing Cost

The cost of a study abroad program varies depending on many factors. Keep these in mind when researching programs and budgeting for your time abroad.

  • Location: Your study abroad destination will greatly impact your overall cost. Major international cities like London and Sydney are very expensive due to high cost of living. The cost of living in a bigger city (like Madrid) is going to be higher than in a smaller city (such as Granada, Spain). Here are some examples of spring 2014 estimated total study abroad cost including living expenses (excluding airfare):

  • Airfare: The cost of the flight to your destination will impact your budget. For example, it is more expensive to fly to Australia than to a country in Western Europe because the distance is much farther. Use sites like STA Travel or Student Universe research flight costs.

  • Currency Exchange Rate: Consider the currency exchange rate between US currency and the local currency. The exchange rate will influence how far your U.S. dollars will go while you are abroad. See an online currency converter to find the current currency conversion rate for country or countries you are considering for study abroad.

  • Duration: The length of the program will impact the cost of your experience. Semester programs are more expensive than summer programs because you take more classes (thus tuition amount is greater) and you will need housing for a longer period of time. However, the longer the program, the less it costs per day, because you spread the fixed costs like the expense of your airline flight over a longer period of time. For example, a round trip airline ticket to Western Europe from St. Louis, MO generally will cost $1,200 - $1,400 whether you stay for 3 weeks or 3 months.

  • Type of Program & SIUE Tuition:

A) Students participating in SIUE faculty led short term programs and exchange programs will be assessed SIUE tuition. Through these two program types, there is no tuition paid to a foreign institution.

B) Students participating in an affiliate program or a direct enrollment program will pay the tuition set by the host institution to the affiliate program or to the host institution. These students are NOT assessed SIUE tuition; there is a $75 SIUE Study Abroad Opportunities Fee (charged to the SIUE bursar bill) for participation in these programs.

  • Living Options: Some housing options are less expensive than others, depending on the program. While not available in every location or program, homestay options usually include most or all meals. Some programs offer budget friendly meal plans; others include a monthly meal stipend in the program fee that helps students to stay on a budget while covering meal costs throughout their time abroad.

Be Prepared to Pay Up-Front Costs

Often you will be required to pay a portion of your study abroad program expenses (such as passport fee, application fees, airfare, deposit, etc.) up to several months before your program starts and before the release of financial aid or scholarships. Plan ahead and be prepared to pay these expenses. CEA and AIFS programs as well as our direct program at John Cabot University will allow financial aid students to postpone the final payment until after the SIUE Financial Aid Disbursement Date with documentation of an approved and accepted financial aid award. Talk with your study abroad advisor about how this procedure works.

Up-Front Costs for SIUE Faculty-Led Short-Term Programs
Program fees (covering airfare, housing, etc) for SIUE Faculty-Led Short-Term Programs are usually spread out in payments which will be due in the term before the term in which the program occurs. Most SIUE faculty-led programs occur over the summer term, and payments for the program fees are due in spring semester. If you are using financial aid, you cannot defer these payments until financial aid is released. Your financial aid award for your faculty led program will first apply toward your SIUE bursar bill for the tuition for the classes associated with your program (and any other outstanding charges you may have) and any remaining balance will be disbursed in the form of a refund check.
