Call for Applications for the Karen Brown Memorial Scholarship for the 2009-2010 Academic Year.
The SIUE Sociology and Criminal Justice department is delighted to solicit applications for the 2009-2010 Karen Brown Memorial Scholarship. Ms. Brown was an outstanding undergraduate and graduate student at SIUE who excelled academically and in providing service to the community while also raising young children on her own.
The scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in Sociology and/ or Criminal Justice who is a single parent with financial need, and who is in good academic standing. Financial need will be the primary criteria for selection. If all other criteria are equal, preference will be given to a single mother, or the person most exemplifying the life of Karen Brown. The scholarship will provide up to $4,500 for the 2009-2010 academic year, for payment of direct tuition and housing costs at SIUE. The scholarship may be renewed for an additional year, contingent on satisfactory academic progress and continuing to meet the stated criteria.

Your application is complete if in addition to filling out this form, you have (a) provided a 1-3 page narrative describing your financial need and how this is connected to being a single parent, (b) included a copy of all of your college course transcripts, (c) provided a statement that indicates a strong commitment to completing a degree in Sociology or Criminal Justice Studies at SIUE, and (d) completed and submitted all financial aid forms to the appropriate SIUE office. By submitting this application you agree that the Department may obtain any supporting information regarding financial need that you have provided to the SIUE Financial Aid office.
By signing this form you also agree that if awarded the scholarship, you will remain a sociology and/or criminal major for the 09-10 academic year and take and satisfactorily complete (grades of C or better) at least 9 credit hours of courses each semester. You also understand that you will forfeit the scholarship if you fail to abide by these conditions.
