Sociology Graduate Application Process

Persons seeking admission for fall semester should apply no later than July 10th of the year in which they wish to begin their studies. Please note, however, that if students wish to apply for an assistantship they must be accepted to the program by the time they apply. The deadline for assistantships is April 15th. For spring semester or summer term admission, students should apply no later than two months before the start of the term, approximately November 15 for Spring and April 1st for summer.

Applying to the graduate program in sociology requires 2 steps.

Step 1 -- Graduate School

Download a graduate application from the graduate school web-site. After you fill out the application send it, along with your fee, to the address that appears on the application.

Step 2 -- Department of Sociology

The Sociology Department requires that students send two documents to the Graduate Director: 1) a "statement of purpose" letter and 2) a sample of writing. The "statement of purpose" letter helps the Graduate Committee understand why you wish to pursue studies in sociology. We would appreciate a writing sample that both demonstrates your writing skills and your sociological competence. Please include your email address in your letter so that we may get in touch with you if necessary.
