In accordance with the “Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act” of 2000, which amends the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act, the Jeanne Clery Act and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is providing a link to the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry. This act requires institutions of higher education to issue a statement advising the campus community where law enforcement information provided by a State concerning registered sex offenders may be obtained. It also requires sex offenders already required to register in a state to provide notice of each institution of higher education in that state at which the person is employed, carries a vocation, or is a student.
In Illinois convicted sex offenders must register in person in the jurisdiction of residence within 10 days of residency. If attending, employed, or carrying on a vocation at an institution of higher education located in a jurisdiction other than their residence, they are also required to register in person with the jurisdiction where the institution of higher education is located. Sex offenders affiliated with the Edwardsville Campus would register with the Edwardsville Police Department (Madison County); those affiliated with the Alton Campus would register with the Alton Police Department (Madison County); those affiliated with the East St. Louis Higher Education Center would register with the East St. Louis Police Department (St. Clair County); and those affiliated with the Springfield School of Nursing would register with the Springfield Police Department (Sangamon County). Each of these jurisdictions has an obligation to notify the SIUE Police Department of any sex offender registered with their jurisdiction and affiliated with any of the above locations.
The Illinois State Police is responsible for maintaining this registry. By going to http://www.isp.state.il.us/sor/ you may enter searches on this web page by city, county, zip code or name.
