CRIME PREVENTION

Crime prevention programs on personal safety and theft prevention are sponsored by various campus organizations throughout the year.  University Police personnel facilitate these programs for students, parents, faculty members, and staff.

Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System is offered at no charge to students.  This is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training.  The class is taught by SIUE police officers who are certified under the R.A.D. System.

Operation Identification is a program to deter the theft of valuables.  Electric engravers are made available to members of the University community free of charge through the Police Department.  Users are encouraged to engrave their driver’s license number on valuables so that items can be identified by police and returned to their owner if stolen.

The University Police provide an escort service to those individuals who feel apprehensive about walking alone on campus.  The police will provide an escort from one building to another on campus or to a vehicle in a campus parking lot.

SIUE Police Department offers a variety of programs to the University community that are available upon request.  Examples of such programs would be:  Drug Awareness, Alcohol Awareness, Personal Safety, Sexual Assault Awareness, etc.   If a request is made for a prevention program that has not previously been done, police personnel will customize a program to the individual’s need.

Requests for a specific program on the Edwardsville Campus should be made to the Police Department at 618/650-3324.  Requests for programs to be held at the SIUE Alton Campus should be made to the School of Dental Medicine Student Affairs Office at 618/474-7170.
