Mr. Matthew L. Cloud is a Senior Military Science Instructor (SMSI) at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He is also currently a Major in the US Army Reserve and serves as a Troop Program Unit member with SIUE Army ROTC.
Mr. Cloud began his military career when he enlisted into the United States Navy in 1992 after graduating High School (Gillespie, IL 1990). He then joined the ROTC program at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville 1996, and earned his commission as a Second Lieutenant in August 2000. He has held many leadership positions in maneuver units, which include Rifle Platoon Leader, Rifle Company Executive Officer, Support Platoon Leader, Battalion Adjutant/S1, Battalion Assistant Operations Officer and Company Commander.
Mr. Cloud's assignments include tours with the United States Navy USS Frank Cable (AS-40) (January 1993-September 1994); Cargo Handling Battalion 4 (January 1995-January 1996); Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 112 (January 1996-September 1996); Company C, 2 nd Battalion, 130 th Infantry Regiment, Illinois Army National Guard (September 1996-August 2000); 4 th Battalion, 31 st Infantry Regiment, 2 nd Brigade, 10 th Mountain Division (April 2001-September 2005); Company C, 2 nd Battalion, 130 th Infantry Regiment, Illinois Army National Guard (November 2005-July 2009); Joint Forces Headquarters, Illinois Army National Guard ( August 2009-January 2010); Major Cloud was a SMSI/Battalion Operations Officer at the St Louis Region ROTC located at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri (September 2005-January 2007); and is a SMSI at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (January 2007-Present). Mr. Cloud has been deployed in support of Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom to Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Djibouti, and Iraq. All overseas deployments were with the 4 th Battalion, 31 st Infantry Regiment "Polar Bears".
Mr. Cloud's civilian education includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville with a Major in Geography, and Minor in History.
Mr. Cloud's military education includes successful completion of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Maneuver Captain's Career Course, Ranger Course, Basic Military Mountaineering Course, Basic Airborne Course, Air Assault Course, Mountain Leaders Close Combat Certification Course, Combat Lifesaver Course, Unit Movement Officer Course, Airlift Load Planner Course, Company Commander Pre-Command Course, Faculty Development Course, Military History Instructor Course, and Combatives Levels I and II Courses.
Mr. Cloud's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal; Army Commendation Medal (5); Army Achievement Medal (2); National Defense Service Medal (2); Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Arrowhead Device; Iraq Campaign Medal; Valorous Unit Award; Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation; Army Meritorious Unit Commendation; Navy Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. Major Cloud has also been awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Air Assault Badge, Basic Army Parachute Badge, Ranger Tab, and Foreign War-Time Service/Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 10 th Mountain Division.
