Retention Programs

  • 5th-Week Assessment
    • During the 5th week of the fall or spring semester, through the Starfish Retention platform, faculty members will be contacted by the Office of Retention and Student Success to identify struggling students. On the assessment, faculty will be able to provide information regarding the student’s current grade, attendance issues and any notes that will be beneficial for student follow-up.
The Office of Retention and Student Success will work with various offices on-campus to follow-up with students regarding a plan to move the student toward success in their courses.

  • Partners for Success (PFS)
    • The Partners for Success program is designed for students who are on academic probation at SIUE. Through the Office of Academic Advising, students in the PFS program will work with their academic advisor in a more hands-on manner. Students are required to set goals, attend multiple advising appointments and attend Student Academic Success Sessions (SASS) during their semester on probation.

  • SIUE 1st
    • The SIUE 1st program is designed for first-year, first-generation students. We know that college is filled with challenges and changes. Students come to SIUE with goals and dreams, and a strong network can make a massive difference in a student’s success. The SIUE 1st program provides tools and resources to help students succeed and tackle the semester’s challenges.

Being the “first” can be exciting — exploring new territory, reaching the finish line, blazing the trail for those coming after you. It can also be a little scary — feeling alone on the journey, being unsure of where to go, and getting lost. You were admitted to SIUE because we believe in you. The SIUE 1st program was created to ensure success for students who are among the first in their families to attend college.

  • The SIUE Experience
    • There are big changes in store for you as a freshman at SIUE. The transition to college can be more intense than you might think. We not only understand that - we want to help you through the process! The SIUE Experience will give you a chance to meet your fellow classmates, learn what it means to be a student here and get a healthy dose of that Cougar spirit.

Upper class students, called Cougar Guides, along with faculty and staff will lead you through The SIUE Experience. You’ll hear the SIUE story through our values of Excellence, Wisdom, Inclusion, Citizenship and Integrity. Explore the purpose and expectations of a college education. Learn about learning and thinking. Understand what it means to be a member of the SIUE community.

But The SIUE Experience is also about telling your story and writing the next chapter. What defines you? How can you make your mark here? In what ways will you contribute to the SIUE community and bring our values to life? The weekend is just the start of something big: your SIUE Experience!

  • Taking Aim
    • Within the Office of Retention and Student Success, the Taking Aim initiative focuses on the students who are attending SIUE but have not currently registered for the upcoming semester. Via email and phone, staff will contact students to work with them to get registered for courses. In most cases, students who have not registered may have specific questions about holds or other roadblocks to registration. The Office of Retention and Student Success staff will work with the student to remove those roadblocks and get registered.
