The SIUE Center for STEM Research, Education and Outreach is a collaborative enterprise among several SIUE academic units (the College of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Education and Engineering, and others), local community colleges and school districts, regional offices of education, and the community at large. The Center’s mission is to develop, strengthen and promote STEM research, education and outreach in the region.
The Illinois Education Research Council (IERC) at SIUE was established in 2000 to provide Illinois with education research to support P-20 education policy making and program development. The IERC undertakes independent research and policy analysis, often in collaboration with other researchers, that informs and strengthens Illinois’ commitment to providing a seamless system of educational opportunities for its citizens. Through publications, presentations, participation on committees and an annual research symposium, the IERC brings objective and reliable evidence to the work of state policy makers and practitioners.
The NCERC at SIUE is a nationally recognized research center dedicated to the development and commercialization of biofuels, specialty chemicals and other renewable compounds. Established through federal and state initiatives, with support from the Illinois and National Corn Growers Associations, the Center promotes rural development and economic stimulus and is providing tomorrow’s workforce with the skills needed to meet the challenges of a changing energy environment. Designated as a Biorefining Center of Excellence, the Center assists in developing the technologies needed to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign oil and provide consumers with economically sound and environmentally responsible fuel options. Research initiatives in renewable energy at the Center are supported through grants, contracts and donor contributions.
The Institute for Urban Research (IUR) brings together the top experts of SIUE to investigate and discover solutions to the issues that affect life in urban and metropolitan areas. Business, government and community leaders rely on the IUR’s expertise in urban issues, data analysis and project management to create applied research projects that benefit the entire region. The IUR assists government, business and nonprofit clients in achieving their goals through fee-for-service arrangements in data collection and analysis, strategic planning, program evaluation and research design.
