I am already attending SIUE but I am concurrently enrolled for one course at another school. I want to transfer the credit for that course and have it applied to my degree program here. How can I ensure that the credit is accepted?

Students should always work with departmental advisors when making plans to complete degree requirements. Advisors will assist you in ensuring that transfer coursework is appropriate to your degree. The Office of the Registrar, Credit Articulation and Degree Audit division, continuously establishes course articulation agreements and with external colleges and universities in an attempt to assist students and advisors with planning. Information regarding these articulations is available at www.siue.edu/registrar/transfer/index.shtml. However, this information should not take the place of the plans you establish with your advisor.

To what SIUE office do I have my official transcripts from other colleges sent?

Students should request that official copies of transcripts are mailed directly from the institutions at which credit was earned. Hand-carried and/or faxed transcripts are not accepted as official. Transcripts should be mailed to the following address:

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Campus Box 1080
Edwardsville, IL 62026-1080

How can I find out if a course I’m taking at another school will be accepted at SIUE?

The Credit Articulation and Degree Audit office evaluates credit for acceptance by the University. Information regarding the acceptance of coursework from many colleges and universities may be obtained at www.siue.edu/registrar/transfer/index.shtml. Appropriateness of transfer coursework to major requirements is generally determined within the major department.

How soon after admission will I receive my transfer credit evaluation?

In most cases, transfer evaluations are available from the Office of the Registrar within 15 working days of Admission. Information regarding acceptance of transfer credit for continuing students is generally made available to advisors within 15 days of receipt of the official transcript reflecting new credit. Students should discuss the appropriateness of the credit toward degree requirements at scheduled advisement sessions.

What if my cumulative GPA from my other colleges is less than 2.000?

If you have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours at the college level and have not achieved an overall combined higher education GPA of at least 2.0, you are not admissible to the University at this time. However, you are encouraged to work toward completion of an AA/AS or ASA degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Upon completion of a transfer degree or achievement of a minimum 2.0 combined GPA, you will be eligible for admission.

What is regional accreditation?

Accreditation is a voluntary process of external review of quality and improvement. Regional accreditors operate in six regions of the country and may review both public and private, profit and not for profit institutions of higher education. Regional accreditors review all aspects of an institution to ensure quality.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Information regarding institutional accreditation can be obtained through each college or university that you have attended or plan to attend. In addition, information regarding regional accreditation status can be obtained through the appropriate association listed below:

Will my transfer coursework be calculated into my SIUE GPA?

No. Transfer coursework is not averaged with SIUE coursework when calculating a student’s grade point average.

Does SIUE accept grades of D in transfer?

All transfer courses appropriate to baccalaureate education for which a passing grade (D or better) was awarded are reviewed for possible credit. However, some degree requirements state that a higher minimum grade in certain coursework is required to satisfy degree requirements. For example, D hours in course work considered equivalent to SIUE English 101 and 102 will not fulfill General Education or University graduation requirements

How should I apply for Admission if I have fewer than 30 hours at other institutions?

Students who have taken college credit after high school graduation and have fewer than 30 semester hours may apply to the University as transfer applicants and must submit high school credentials, in addition to completed college credit. Additional information regarding the application process is available at www.siue.edu/prospectivestudents.

Is there a limit to the number of hours I can transfer to SIUE?

While we do not limit the number of hours that students may transfer to the University, we do limit the number of those hours that will apply toward our degree programs. If you are transferring from an accredited two-year institution, remember that, in order to earn a degree from SIUE, you must complete 60 semester hours at an accredited four-year institution and 30 of these 60 hours must be completed at SIUE to satisfy the University residency requirements. If you are transferring to SIUE from a four-year institution, you also must satisfy the 30-semester hour SIUE residency requirement.

What is the Illinois Articulation Initiative?

The Illinois Articulation Initiative is a statewide agreement that identifies a common curriculum across participating institutions in an attempt to assist students in transfer. Students completing the General Education Core Curriculum at a participating institution prior to admission at SIUE will have lower division general education requirements satisfied upon entry to the University. These students will enter the University having only major requirements, interdisciplinary studies, and foreign language (if appropriate) remaining for fulfillment of degree requirements.

Information regarding the Illinois Articulation Initiative may be found by clicking here.

Am I automatically accepted into SIUE if I have earned a degree from a regionally accredited two-year or four-year school?

Students who have received an Associate in Arts, Science, Science and Arts or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university and have maintained a minimum higher cumulative GPA since receipt of the degree are admissible at the undergraduate level. However, please keep in mind that formal application is required and application deadlines apply to all students. Additional information regarding application deadlines is available at www.siue.edu/prospectivestudents.

Can I make an appointment with an academic adviser as soon as I have been admitted, even if I haven’t received my transfer credit evaluation?

In order to ensure that complete information is available to advisors, students should wait until a transfer evaluation is available prior to advisement. Transfer evaluations are completed within 15 business days of admission or receipt of additional coursework for continuing students.

How will my transfer credit be applied to my degree requirements at SIUE?

Students who have completed the Illinois General Education Core Curriculum at an IAI participating school will have all general education requirements waived with the exception of one Interdisciplinary Studies course and foreign language if applicable.

Credit will be evaluated to determine equivalency to SIUE coursework and, if equivalent, will apply in the same manner in which the course would have been applied had it been completed at SIUE. Courses for which equivalency could not be established, will be applied toward general education requirements if the content meets the objectives of the general education curriculum. In addition, coursework that is determined appropriate for acceptance by the University, but does not have an SIUE equivalent or meet general education requirements, may be used at the discretion of a student’s major department as appropriate.

If the credit is occupational or developmental/preparatory, it will not be accepted toward SIUE general education or degree requirements.

May courses completed outside the United States be evaluated for transfer credit?

Coursework completed outside of the United States is accepted as appropriate toward University degree requirements. Generally credit is not considered equivalent to SIUE coursework, however it may be appropriately substituted in many cases.

The Office of Admissions evaluates all international credit. Students requiring further information regarding international transfer should contact the Office of Admissions.

After you have completed new coursework at another school, you must have an official transcript reflecting this credit sent to:

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Campus Box 1080
Edwardsville, IL 62026-1080.

Transfer coursework will not be applied to SIUE degree requirements until an official transcript has been received and a formal evaluation has occurred.
