Competitive Scholarships

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship
Faculty Representative:  Ronald Schaefer

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program will award approximately 35 scholarships to college seniors or recent graduates to attend graduate programs.  The scholarship awards will provide funding for tuition, room and board, books, and other required fees for the length of the graduate degree program, up to six years.  The amount and duration of awards will vary by student, based on the cost of attendance and length of the program as well as other scholarships or grants received.  The maximum award per student is $50,000 per year  Candidates for this scholarship must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their undergraduate institution.  For more information, see http://www.jackkentcookefoundation.org

Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation
Faculty Representative:  Kevin Johnson

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship is for undergraduate students in disciplines related to the environment and for Native American and Alaska Natives who study health care or tribal public policy.  Foundation awards approximately 80 scholarships of up to $5,000 to outstanding students, to be known as Morris K. Udall Scholars.  In addition, the Foundation will award 30 scholarships of $350 to honorable mention recipients. To be considered for an award, students must be nominated by their undergraduate institution.   Awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students:  (1) college sophomores or juniors in the current academic year, have outstanding potential, and who study the environment and related fields;  and (2) be Native American or Alaska Native students who are college sophomores or juniors in the current academic year, have outstanding potential, and are in fields related to health care or tribal public policy.  For more information, see http://www.udall.gov/

James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation

The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation seeks to award annually at least one graduate-level fellowship in every state.  Fellowships are available to college seniors who are preparing to become secondary school teachers of history, government, and social studies.  The Foundation also offers Senior Fellowships to in-service teachers of these subjects who desire to earn a master's degree.  Fellowships offer up to $24,000 in financial support.  Applications are due March 1 annually.  For more information see http://www.jamesmadison.com

Truman Scholarship

The Harry Truman Scholarship Foundation seeks to award $30,000 merit-based scholarships to potential Truman Scholars’ who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in public service.  Candidates must attend an accredited U.S. college or university and be nominated by the institution's Truman Faculty Representative, be U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals, complete an application and write a policy recommendation, and be in the upper quarter of their junior class.  For further information, see http://www.truman.gov

The Rhodes Scholarship Trust
Faculty representative:  Robert Ware

At the time of application, an applicant must be a citizen of the US and an applicant must have achieved academic standing sufficiently advanced to assure completion of a bachelor's degree.  A Rhodes Scholarship consists of a direct payment to the Scholar's college of all tuition fees (such as matriculation, tuition, lab fees, and certain other set charges), plus a maintenance allowance of not less than ?9,484 per annum paid directly to the Scholar in installments during the term of the Scholarship.   For more information, see http://www.rhodesscholar.org or http://www.ox.ac.uk

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program

The scholarship was established in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater.  It covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.  Junior scholars will be eligible to receive support for a maximum of two years and senior scholars will be eligible to receive support for a maximum of one year.  These awards, based on merit, are made to students who have demonstrated interest in and commitment to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.  For more information, see http://www.act.org/goldwater
