STEM Faculty Fellows

The SIUE STEM Center has announced its two faculty fellows for FY18. The competitive fellowship engages in undergraduate education research aligned with the mission of the STEM Center to innovate ways to engage students in STEM. Connie Barber, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Business’ Department of Computer Management and Information Systems, will research gamifying information systems. Dr. Barber’s project is entitled, “When Your Students are Quest-masters: Gamifying Information Systems Course Content.” Sinan Onal, PhD, an assistant professor in the School of Engineering’s Department of Industrial Engineering, will work on a project involving the design of medical devices. Dr. Onal’s project is entitled, “Integration of Medical Device Design and Fabrication Projects into the Industrial Engineering Curriculum through Collaborating with Industry Partners.”

Amazon Supports Faculty Research on Illinois Chorus Frog

Amazon has gifted $10,000 to SIUE in support of Dr. Richard Essner’s research on the Illinois Chorus Frog. Essner is an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.

“I am excited by Amazon’s support of our research,” Essner said. “It is unusual to see a corporation take such a strong interest in local conservation. Their donation will allow us to purchase radio transmitters that will be used to track the movements of Illinois Chorus Frogs. This will help us to identify critical habitat and inform our conservation effort.”

In March, Essner will give a presentation on his research to Amazon employees of the fulfillment centers in Edwardsville. In addition, each Amazon fulfillment center identifies a mascot and the Illinois Chorus Frog will serve as the mascot for one of the Edwardsville buildings.

Department of Psychology Receives Endowment for Visiting Scholars with Adlerian Expertise

SIUE School of Nursing Online Grad Programs Among the Best

U.S. News & World Report highly ranked SIUE’s School of Nursing among the top 100 in its 2017 Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs list released Jan. 10. The School is ranked 94th among 140 schools nationally.  The School of Nursing’s online graduate degree programs include a family nurse practitioner doctor of nursing practice (DNP), post-master’s DNP, and master’s degrees in health care nursing administration (HCNA) and nurse educator (NE).

Urban Studies Minor Now Available

Encompassing coursework in 12 different departments, the Urban Studies Minor is dedicated to the cultivation of knowledge and skills pertaining to urban issues at the local, national and global scales. Study Abroad Fair

The Study Abroad Fair will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Wednesday October 5th in the Morris University Center Goshen Lounge. The 2016 Study Abroad Fair will showcase SIUE faculty-led programs, the University's international partner institutions, and affiliate companies and services. Faculty and staff can encourage students to attend to learn more about study abroad at SIUE. Students will hear from study abroad veterans, and talk with faculty leaders as well as program and service providers. Faculty interested in leading future study abroad programs are also welcome to ask questions.

SIUE a Top 15 Midwest Regional Public University

U.S. News & World Report ranks SIUE among the best Regional Universities Midwest for the 13th consecutive year and among the top 15 public universities in that category.  SIUE is also rated among the top Midwest Regionals for least amount of student debt upon graduation. The listing is in the magazine’s “Best Colleges of 2017” issue that was released Tuesday, Sept. 13.   SIUE was featured at number 63 in this year’s rankings of 163 Regional Universities Midwest. The University is 13th overall among public universities in that category.  The U.S. News overall scores are based on the reputation of SIUE in higher education, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

SIUE Welcomes Students for Fall 2016

SIUE welcomes students to campus today for fall 2016.

University Housing’s Move-In Day will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. today at Bluff, Prairie and Woodland residence halls.

A convocation for new SIUE students will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 19 in the Vadalabene Center. SIUE’s fifth annual Cougar Kick-Off is planned later from 6-10 p.m. Friday in the Korte Stadium.

Move-In Day, New Student Convocation and the Cougar Kick-Off are all part of The SIUE Experience that runs from Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 18-21.

SIUE School of Nursing’s Bernaix to Pioneer Creative Curriculum and Expand Area Partnerships

SIUE's School of Nursing continues to educate and prepare nurses to be expert clinicians and healthcare leaders. As dean of the School, Laura Bernaix, PhD, RN, intends to expand opportunities for SIUE School of Nursing students by way of inventive curriculum development and strong clinical partnerships.

Bernaix is an alum of the School, and has been a valued faculty member and administrator since 1987. She assumed the role of dean in May, after having served as interim dean since June 2014.

SIUE Lands Among Forbes Magazine's Top Colleges

SIUE is among the top four public universities in the state according to Forbes magazine’s top colleges ranking. Forbes ranked 660 institutions nationally, but only the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois-Chicago and Illinois State University were listed ahead of SIUE instate. The magazine’s criteria are based on return on investment. It assigns the greatest weight to success after graduation (32.5 percent), student debt (25 percent) and student satisfaction (25 percent).

School of Pharmacy’s Bergman to Present at Healthcare Summit

SIUE's School of Pharmacy’s Scott Bergman, associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, will present on appropriate use of antimicrobials, including antibiotics, at the Illinois Summit on Antimicrobial Stewardship on Tuesday, July 12 in Springfield.

“Antimicrobial stewardship is based on the premise that antibiotics are a shared resource that should be preserved for the common good of society,” Bergman said. “When one person misuses them, it impacts resistance that is passed on to others. This happens when patients ask for antibiotics even if they are not entirely necessary, or when healthcare providers prescribe them for viral infections “just in case” there is also a bacterial cause.”

School of Nursing Partners with Baptist Health Madisonville

Thanks to a new partnership with the SIUE School of Nursing (SON), Baptist Health Madisonville (Kentucky) nurses can obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing in as little as one year from the comfort of their own homes and on a schedule that fits their lives.

“We are excited to work with Baptist Health to offer our online, accelerated RN to BS in nursing degree,” said Dr. Roberta Harrison, assistant dean for undergraduate programs at SIUE School of Nursing. “This is a great opportunity to reach more working nurses throughout Kentucky to offer our affordable, progressive and innovative online program.”

SIUE’s accelerated RN to BS program is offered in a flexible, entirely online format to accommodate the needs of working RNs.

SIUE Finalist in Scripps International Innovators Cup

SIUE is among eight schools competing in the second annual Scripps International Innovators Cup. A team of five students from SIUE’s media management course met the challenge of using their entrepreneurial skills to develop an innovative idea that solves a media-related issue.

The SIUE team designed Fresh Start, a location-based app that will serve food deserts by delivering information about available vegan and vegetarian eating and shopping options.

Food deserts, as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are parts of the country that lack grocery stores, farmers’ markets and healthy food providers.

“The project offered great hands-on experience and an opportunity to learn more about business models, and how to work as a group in a business atmosphere,” said Brent Lallish, a senior mass communications student. “Our app, Fresh Start, is aimed toward the millennial population of which 12 percent of people are vegetarian.”

SIUE Students Rank Second in Illinois CPA Exam Results

SIUE ranked second among Illinois’ 12 public universities in the annual Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam results. Scoring well above state and national averages, SIUE accounting graduates were runners-up to graduates from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

 “Our students did extremely well to place second in such a highly competitive environment,” said John Navin, PhD and dean of the SIUE School of Business. “Congratulations to the Department of Accounting’s leadership and faculty on their excellent work preparing our students.”

SIUE’s Online Master’s in Adult and Continuing Education

SIUE’s new online master’s program option in adult and continuing education is expanding the University’s reach by offering a unique range of online courses, catered toward working individuals.

The program option is a series of online courses available in the master’s in curriculum and instruction through the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior’s Department of Teaching and Learning. It is designed to integrate the adult learner’s past and future work experience, including Career and Technical Education (CTE).

“Enrollment in the program is exceeding expectations,” said Caroline Pryor, EdD, associate professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning. “There appears to be a great need for those professionals who work with adults to expand their skills, especially their knowledge of how adults learn and tools to help them learn.”
