ESLi Center Returns to SIUE Campus

January 12, 2015

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and English as a Second Language International (ESLi) have partnered to bring an intensive English program back to campus. ESLi and SIUE welcomed the first group of international students to the ESLi center last week. Twenty seven students were admitted to the ESLi program for the spring including individuals from Saudi Arabia, China, Bangladesh, Iraq, Bolivia, Japan, Vietnam and India. These students have met all academic requirements for admission to SIUE and will enroll in undergraduate or graduate degree programs after demonstrating English proficiency through completion of the ESLi program.

This new endeavor is one of several strategies initiated to increase SIUE’s desirability among international students and would not be possible without the support of Chancellor Furst-Bowe, Provost Ansari, and Vice Chancellor Emmanuel, who first brought ESLi to the University’s attention several years ago. It is also important to acknowledge the members of the ESLi “onramp committee” who represent more than a dozen offices on campus. They have been working together over the past several months to make sure the ESLi organization and ESli students have everything they need for a successful transition to SIUE.

If you happen to encounter one of these students on campus and they need your assistance you may:

1. Escort them to Evergreen Hall (location of the ESLi program)
2. Contact Julie Wojtal at X 5458 (ESLi Director at SIUE)
3. Contact Melissa Mace at X 2756 (Assistant Director of International and Graduate Recruitment, Office of Admissions)

Please join us in welcoming ESLi to SIUE!
