Fall Commencement Ceremonies

December 14, 2014

Saturday signaled the end of the semester at SIUE as 1,159 eligible graduates received their degrees. The 2014 Fall Commencement ceremonies were held at the Vadalabene center on campus, and Chancellor Julie Furst-Bowe oversaw the festivities and focused on SIUE’s commitment to diversity and inclusion during her remarks.

The morning ceremony included students from the Graduate School and the Schools of Business, Nursing, and Education, Health and Human Behavior. The morning’s address was given by Dr. Kelly Gable, associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and winner of the 2014 Teaching Excellence Award. She spoke to the students about simple life lessons and the importance of never giving up while striving to make the world a better place. In addition, non-traditional student Shanda Nygard shared about her life-changing experiences at SIUE with attendants as the morning’s student speaker.

The afternoon ceremony’s address was given by Dr. Eric “Duff” Wrobbel, associate professor in the Department of Applied Communication Studies (formerly known as the Department of Speech Communication) and winner of the 2014 Great Teacher Award. He spoke to students from the Graduate School, College of Arts and Sciences, and School of Engineering about the importance and lasting benefits of receiving a quality education. Student speaker Matthew Stoecklin also shared about the influence his experience at SIUE has had in his life.
