U.S. Department of Labor Awards Nearly $10-Million Grant

September 17, 2014

The Department of Labor has awarded a grant worth $9,956,011 to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the Building Illinois’ Bioeconomy (BIB) consortium as part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) initiative. The TAACCCT initiative provides higher education institutions with funds to improve and expand their ability to deliver education and career-training programs so that job-seekers have access to training for in-demand skills.

As the leading higher education institution of the five-member BIB consortium, SIUE is excited to merge the collective strengths and resources of each partner school with a network of committed employers to establish transformative career pathways, with an emphasis on certificate programs that can be completed in two years or less. This includes plans to utilize the National Corn-To-Ethanol Research Center and Environmental Resources Training Center at SIUE to prepare students for jobs in the fields of bioprocessing and water management, as well as the creation of the first bioprocess technician certificate program in the nation.
