Springboard FAQ I still have questions ... If you have any further questions about Springboard to Success, please call us at 1-800-447-SIUE or (618) 650-3705, or e-mail us at springboard@siue.edu. 1. Why should I attend Springboard to Success?
Perhaps the biggest reason: attendance at the program is mandatory for all new freshmen. Beyond this, however, students and parents will have an opportunity to: - be advised and register for fall classes;
- take care of other University business;
- get your CougarCard — your SIUE student ID;
- meet current and future SIUE students, faculty and staff;
- explore the campus and learn your way around.
This will be an informative day for students and parents alike; our hope is that you'll leave the University feeling more comfortable not only with your new class schedule, but with SIUE in general. Now is the time to get all your questions answered, and that's what this program is all about. 2. How do I know whether I need placement testing?
Students entering SIUE may be required to take placement tests in writing, math or reading before registering for classes for the first time. The tests measure your skills and help your academic adviser select the classes you may need to get started and be successful at SIUE.
A letter, sent with your Springboard to Success invitation beginning in October, will help you determine whether you need placement tests. If you do, placement tests must be completed at least three business days before your Springboard session, and can be scheduled on Testing Services’ Web site at www.siue.edu/IS/TEST/Place.
If your ACT math score is below 22 and you are planning to major in engineering, computer science, chemistry, biology, physics, medical technology, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-veterinary medicine, or pre-pharmacy and have not taken a general college chemistry course equivalent to CHEM 121A at SIUE, you will need to take the Chemistry Readiness Examination. This 60-item, 55-minute, multiple choice test will assess your math skills, knowledge of chemistry concepts, and chemistry problem-solving abilities.
Reading, writing, and/or mathematics placement tests are required unless you have completed or received the following: - ENG 101 or 102 (English Composition) at the college level = exemption from reading/writing tests
- AD 095 (Intermediate Algebra) or higher college level math = exemption from mathematics test
- ACT English subscore greater than/equal to 21 = exemption from writing test
- ACT Reading subscore greater than/equal to 19 = exemption from reading test
- ACT Math subscore greater than or equal to 19 = exemption from mathematics test
To register online for your placement test date, please visit www.siue.edu/IS/TEST/PLACE. 3. What should I bring to Springboard to Success? - confirmation/pre-arrival information;
- photo identification card (such as a driver’s license or state issued identification card);
- any personal items required for an overnight stay (we provide bed linens and towels…but other than this, if you need it to start or end your day, please bring it with you!)
- Social Security number;
- comfortable clothing and shoes — you’ll be walking around campus.
- a sweatshirt or jacket; our conference facilities are often quite chilly, even in the summer
4. What if I am not available to attend? All new freshmen are required to attend a Springboard to Success program. If you can't attend any of the available programs, contact the Office of Admissions at (618) 650-3705 or 1-800-447-SIUE (7483). |
