Safety Bulletin - 3/30/11

On Tuesday, March 29, 2010 University Police took a report of a residential burglary occurring in Prairie hall. The resident reported his laptop computer had been stolen from his room on Sunday, March 27, at approximately 4:00 pm. The victim stated the door was not locked at the time of the burglary.

Whether you live in a dorm room, an apartment, or a house, your residence is the place where you keep many valuable items and personal belongings that can be impossible to replace. Take precautions to protect yourself and those belongings. Following are some crime prevention tips that will help you achieve that goal.

  • Lock your doors. It only takes seconds for someone to enter an unlocked door and take your valuables. Always keep your door locked, even if you will only be gone a few minutes.
  • Know who is in your residence. You have the right and the responsibility to choose who enters your residence. If someone comes in your residence you do not know, ask them to leave. If they do not adhere to your request, don't make a big deal out of it. Go to another room and call the police and ask them to respond to have the individual/individuals removed.
  • For individuals 21 years of age or older, drink responsibly. Limit your alcohol intake so you are aware of those around you and what is happening in your residence.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight. Place valuables in drawers or behind locked doors.
  • After a gathering take time to check that all windows are locked and lock your doors before going to bed.
  • Inventory all items of value. Keep a list of all your valuables along with serial numbers and a description of the item. It is a wise idea to photograph your valuables and keep the photos with this list. Make sure to also list all your credit cards, bank cards, etc. along with the account numbers. Write down phone numbers of who you need to call to cancel these cards and accounts. This list should be kept in a secure place and, when possible, send a copy of the list to a parent or guardian to be kept in the event your copy gets stolen or is misplaced.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the SIUE Police Department at 650-3324.

Look out for yourself and others. If you hear or see something that doesn't seem right, call the University Police immediately by dialing 911. You may also reach the SIUE Police Department by calling the non-emergency number at 650-3324.

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN AND, PLEASE, IF YOU SEE OR HEAR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS, REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY!
