Safety Bulletin - October 6, 2008

On October 5, 2008 at approximately 10:45 pm, a SIUE student made a police report in reference to a suspicious person on the bike trail.  The SIUE student had left Lovejoy Library and was walking to Cougar Village.  In the vicinity of Parking Lot 10 near the entrance to Cougar Lake Recreation Area, the student noticed a male subject following behind the student.  The student then began to run at which time the male subject also started to chase after the student.  The student ran into Cougar Village Parking Lot 4A where there were additional people present.  Once the male subject saw the other individuals, he fled the area.   The following description was given by the student:

 If you have seen anyone fitting this description or if you have any information, please contact the SIUE Police Department at 650-3324.  You may also send an email to police@siue.edu.  If you are in an emergency situation, dial 911.

 Please take a moment to read the following tips on personal safety:

• BE ALERT!  Be aware of your surroundings and who is around you.  Know where you are going and the route  you will take.
• Avoid walking or jogging alone, especially at night.  Vary your route and stay in well-traveled, well-lighted areas.
• Don’t be afraid to make a scene by screaming or using a whistle.  Whistles are available at the SIUE Police Department at no cost.
• 'If you feel apprehensive about walking alone on campus, take advantage of the ESCORT SERVICE the Police Department offers.  Just call the police department at 3324.  As soon as an officer is available, they will come to your location
• Become familiar with the Emergency Phones that are located along the bike paths and parking lots on campus.  Know how to use them so if you are in an emergency situation you will know which button to push and can save valuable time.
• Look out for others and yourself--if you see something that looks suspicious, REPORT IT!!
