Safety Bulletin - May 1, 2008

On April 29, 2008, it was brought to the attention of the SIUE Police Department that a Residential Burglary had allegedly occurred in Cougar Village sometime around March 17, 2008. There was no forced entry into the apartment. The resident believes the items were taken during a time when numerous non-residents visited the apartment.

Crime reduction on campus requires the continued active support of the University community. Following are some crime prevention tips that will help us achieve that goal:

At Home:

  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight. Keep your purse, wallet, and other valuables in a secure location and out of sight.
  • Lock your doors whenever you leave your room or apartment, even if you will only be gone for a minute.
  • Make sure your windows are locked at all times. Make it a habit to close your shades if you will be gone or when the sun goes down to prevent others from seeing into your room.
  • Leave a light on when you are away. Timers are inexpensive and can be set to turn on a light or radio when you are not home.
  • Never leave a message on your answering machine that you are not at home; indicate that you are unavailable right now.
  • Create an inventory of your belongings listing the item and serial number. Take photos of your valuables, and make photocopies of the contents of your wallet (credit cards, driver's license, etc.) Keep this list, photos, and photocopies in a safe place.

Your Car:

  • Try to park in well-lighted areas.
  • Never leave your keys in the car or the motor running when no one's in the car.
  • Always lock the car and roll up the windows when you get out of the vehicle.
  • Never leave valuables in plain view. Put them in the trunk or at least under the seat or in the glove compartment.

It is our experience that in most burglaries and thefts, entry is gained through an unlocked door or window. Don't make it so easy - LOCK YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS!

If you see anything suspicious or witness a theft, call 911 to reach the SIUE Police. You may also reach the SIUE Police Department by calling the non-emergency number at 650-3324.

Keep your eyes open and, please, if you see it or hear it, report it immediately!!
