The goals of the Wellness Center are to:
The core facets of wellness are disease prevention and health promotion. The World Health Organization suggests that more than 2% of deaths from chronic disease may be prevented by health education. The Wellness Center initiatives focus on prevention of disease through screenings and health promotion through education.
The pharmacists at the Wellness Center are interested in partnering with community pharmacists and organizations to provide health education to patients and health care professionals.
The pharmacists and student pharmacists can measure fasting glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels and conduct screenings for cardiovascular risk, osteoporosis and cancer. The Center provides education on common issues such as nutrition, tobacco cessation, physical activity, poison prevention, medication safety and asthma control, which are important aspects of wellness. The pharmacists and student pharmacists are an educational resource to the community for bioterrorism and ‘hot’ health issues. These issues will be addressed as the need arises and may take the form of speaking engagements in the community, information provided to the news media, or information provided for community newsletters.
