The Institutional Animal Care Use Committee (IACUC) is established to evaluate the care of animals held or used for research, teaching, and other activities, and to insure that required standards are met.

I. Functions of the Committee

A. To comply with Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Policy), the Committee meets semi-annually to inspect animal facilities and to evaluate the program. It also reviews all protocols for the use of animals for research, instruction, and other activities.

B. An Annual Report of Research Facility is filed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institute of Health.

II. Members and Number

A. Voting Members

1. At least five members, SIUE faculty, one of which non-scientist.

2. One member, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

3. One member from the community not affliated with SIUE.

B. Non-Voting Resource Member

1. Administrator, Office of Research and Projects

III. Selection Procedures

The Committee, in accordance with federal regulations, is appointed by the Associate Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School.
