SIUE School of Nursing alumna Kelly Werthwein '12 has been making great strides with her current nursing career.
"I love my job," said Kelly, a native of Springfield, Ill. "I feel lucky every day that I get to do what I love."
Currently, Kelly works at Darthmouth-Hitckcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., as an operating room nurse specializing in trauma surgery and genitourinary/gynecology (GU/GYN) robotics. On top of her surgical duties, she is also a charge nurse responsible for facilitating 28 operating rooms.
In 2011, Kelly earned a summer internship with Darthmouth. It was during this internship that she received exposure to working in an operating room. "This internship helped get my foot in the door to work as an operating room nurse upon graduation," said Kelly. "Not many hospitals hire new nurses directly into the operating room, but my previous internship experience set me apart from other new nurses."
Kelly attributes much of her professional success to the School of Nursing. "SIUE provided me with such a diverse education," said Kelly. "The incredible nursing faculty challenged me to learn and expand my ability to provide excellent patient care to many different demographics."
In addition to nursing, Kelly has always been interested in travel. During her time at SIUE, she studied abroad in Mexico to gain an in-depth knowledge of using the Spanish language in the medical profession. In the future, she plans to hike the Appalachian trail, a 2,160 mile hike from Georgia to Maine. She also hopes to schedule a trip abroad to use her nursing skills to help those in need.
"I am so grateful that the nursing profession allows me the opportunity to travel and do all the things I love."
