Luther Mieser is the 2012 Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Excellence Award recipient. This award is given to a student who exhibits outstanding professionalism, demonstrates creativity and curiosity to learn, and emulates the art and science of nurse anesthesia care. Clinical coordinators nominate students that they feel meet these three levels of excellence.
"Receiving the Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Excellence Award was both humbling and a great honor," Luther said. "Every single classmate of mine easily deserves this award just as much as me. They are all top-notch people and practitioners. To be selected out of such a great group of people was truly an honor.
"All of my classmates and faculty have played a big role and been very helpful in getting me to this point," Luther said. "The most valuable thing that I'm taking away from school is that I figured out what I am capable of. You have to develop such a strong sense of self confidence to go along with the knowledge you obtain, but you also have to have a high level of self-motivation. The program teaches you a lot about who you are and what you are capable of doing."
Luther, originally from Concordia, Mo., earned his bachelors of science in nursing from Rockhurst University in Kansas City.
The wide variety of clinical sites that SIUE offers to their CRNA students is what drew Luther to the program. "SIUE offered clinical sites with two operating rooms and some with 30," Luther said. "As students, we were able to experience a lot of different situations."
Luther currently lives in Imperial, Mo. with his wife, Heather, who he met in nursing school.
