Dr. Andrew Griffin, nurse anesthesia program director, and Paul A. Darr, assistant nurse anesthesia program director, served as mentors at the Assembly of School Faculty in February 2013. The American Association of Nurse Anesthetist (AANA) hosted assembly, which took place in Tucson, Ariz., welcomed students and faculty from all over the United States. The three-day assembly titled, "Information, Collaboration and Transformation in Education" highlighted current issues in nurse anesthesia education and focused on students who have the desire to become faculty members in the future.
Andrew and Paul were randomly assigned students from other nurse anesthesia programs. The students had the opportunity to spend the day learning and networking with their mentors, attend meetings, and engage in one-on-one discussions about academic roles and being faculty members.
"Students are able to spend time and hear firsthand about the lives of faculty from their mentors, including the time commitments, the constraints and the overall reality of working as a faculty member," Paul said. "Serving as a mentor at this National Assembly gives exposure to SIUE and the nurse anesthesia program."
