The goal of the SIUE School of Nursing graduate program is to prepare expert nurses for leadership in professional nursing practice and patient-centered health care delivery. Master's degrees and post-master's certificates are awarded in two specialty areas: health care nursing administration (HCNA) and nurse educator (NE). Doctoral degrees are offered for post-master's advanced practice nurses, as well as post baccalaureate to DNP programs in nurse anesthesia and family nurse practitioner.
The post-master's doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program educates nurses for the highest level of clinical practice, focusing on their advanced nursing practice specialty area or in health care administration. The nurse anesthesia DNP specialization prepares registered nurses with baccalaureate degrees to provide individualized anesthetic patient care for diagnostic, therapeutic or pain management procedures. The family nurse practitioner DNP prepares nurses with baccalaureate degrees to provide primary health care across the lifespan.
These majors, all accredited, prepare the graduate to take the appropriate certifying/licensing examinations, enabling them to attain credentials and practice as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs).
Graduate nursing education builds on baccalaureate nursing education and emphasizes leadership skills and the expertise necessary to assume complex, specialized roles while providing direct and indirect nursing care to individuals, groups and families. Our programs broaden the perspective of students by requiring them to take innovative interdisciplinary approaches to resolve health care problems. Clinical practicum experiences are required and are individualized according to the student's professional experience, interest and academic needs.
The School inspires students and faculty to embody the creativity to teach, the curiosity to learn, the courage to serve, and the compassion to care for others in this diverse and complex world, forever exemplifying nursing excellence in action. We continue to make our programs accessible to career-oriented students by offering web-based courses and flexible locations.
