Defining Excellence in the School of Nursing

Advanced Education Simulated Learning Center: $2 million

Increasingly, advanced practice nurses are at the forefront of primary and preventive health care. The level and complexity of diagnoses and procedures these nurses must perform demand the most technologically-sophisticated laboratories in which to learn and practice. To ensure our 200-plus graduate students gain the clinical skills they need to prepare for positions in a wide range of regional health care settings, we are seeking funding to create a new Advanced Education Simulated Learning Center dedicated to graduate education.

Support is needed to fully equip the Center with the following:

• Four patient examination rooms fully-equipped with electronic assessment tools such as oto-ophthalmoscopes
• Central operations room with video recording equipment
• Intensive care room
• Surgical room with anesthesia equipment
• Four high-fidelity mannequins that simulate breathing, heart sounds and other human functions
• High-fidelity mannequin heads which model abnormal and normal conditions of the eyes, ears and throat
• Mannequins on which to perform colonoscopies and insert intravenous lines
• One super mannequin for anesthetic intubation

By simulating the patient experience in a technologically advanced lab, graduate students will gain the knowledge and confidence they need to provide superior care to patients throughout the region.
