Scholarship and Awards

2009-2010 School of Nursing Scholarship Brochure and Application

The 2009-2010 School of Nursing Scholarship Brochure and Application are now available.  Printed copies can be picked up at the Receptionist’s desk in Alumni Hall, Room 2117.  Completed application packets must be MAILED to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, School of Nursing, Campus Box 1066, Alumni Hall 2117, Edwardsville, IL  62026 or HAND DELIVERED  to the School of Nursing Office, Alumni Hall, Room 2117, by the end of the business day (4:30 p.m.), Thursday, January 14, 2009.  Application packets submitted on-line or by FAX transmittal will NOT be accepted.  There is over $13,000 available in scholarships this year.

Basic Criteria—All applications will be evaluated based on:

  • Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0 for consideration
  • A student’s goals for the nursing profession
  • Community service and extra curricular activities
  • Must be currently enrolled in the School of Nursing

2008 School of Nursing Scholarship Awardees

The School of Nursing offered more than $11,000 in scholarship and awards to qualified undergraduate and graduate students in 2008.  For a list of awardees, please click here.

Scholarships Available to Undergraduate Students Only

  • Ann Heiden Wharton Memorial Nursing Award   (U)
    • To support a traditional four-year student. 
    • Applicants must be:
      • Currently a junior student
      • A member of the Student Nurse’s Association
      • Involved in community service
  • Anthony Oliver and Felissa Lashley Award in Nursing   (U)
    • To recognize non-traditional students (RN to BS) who demonstrate the mission of the School of Nursing and the core values of SIUE. 
    • Applicants must:
      • Currently be a semester 7 or 8 student
  • Cecil Howard Griffin and Florence Bowmaster Griffin Award   (U)
    • To honor the lives of Howard & Florence Griffin by providing scholarships for undergraduate or accelerated bachelor’s degree students in the School of Nursing.
  • Janice M. Bloomfield Memorial Award   (U)
    • To support a full-time nursing student.  Preference is given to non-traditional students (RN to BS)
    • Applicants must:
      • Be currently of semester 6 or 7 status (RN to BS students must be junior or senior status)
      • Demonstrate financial need (requires FAFSA)
  • Pre-Clinical Nursing Student Scholarship   (U)
    • To support mid-level nursing students who demonstrate the mission of the School of Nursing and the core values of SIUE. 
    • Applicants must:
      • Be a sophomore fall or spring semester
  • Rose M. Juhasz, RN Memorial Nursing Scholarship   (U)
    • To support study for a full-time, traditional BSN nursing student.  In honor of Rose Juhasz’s 40 years as an OB nurse, preference is given to candidates interested in obstetrics.  Preference also given to students of Hungarian descent, but not required for award.
    • Applicants must:
      • Be junior students planning to work in obstetrics
  • Stacey Jo Probst Memorial Nursing Award   (U)
    • To recognize a graduating student who represents the nursing profession in a way that will reflect caring, humanism and professionalism. Preference is given to candidates interested in gerontology.  
    • Applicants must:
      • Be currently a last semester senior traditional, ABS, or RN to BS

Scholarships available to Both Undergraduate and Graduate Students

  • C. Harold Goddard Scholarship for Nursing   (U/G)
    • To support a BSN, RN to BS, ABS or MSN student from West Frankfort, Illinois. 
    • Applicants must:
      • Be from West Frankfort, Illinois.
  • Nursing Alumni Heritage Award Scholarship*   (U/G)
    • To provide scholarships for students in the School of Nursing. One Scholarship per option will be awarded. 
    • Applicants must:
      • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5
      • Demonstrate financial need (requires FAFSA)
      • Write a one-page, double-spaced, 10 pt. font essay on the topic “The Importance of Political Activity by Student Nurses”
    • Other Criteria:
      • BSN Student—junior or senior
      • ABS Student—be currently enrolled
      • RN to BS Student—currently enrolled and have been enrolled for at least 2 semesters
      • MSN Student—currently enrolled and have been enrolled for at least one semester.
  • Pearl Morgan Award in Pediatric Nursing   (U/G)
    • To recognize the achievements of nursing students with a specialization or interest in pediatric nursing. 
    • Applicants must be:
      • BSN Student—currently a junior or senior level who intends to work in pediatrics
      • ABS Student—currently enrolled and intends to work in pediatrics
      • RN to BS or MSN—currently enrolled and completed at least one semester, who intends to work in pediatrics
  • Shirley Strohmeyer Memorial Nursing Award   (U/G)
    • To recognize a student best demonstrating the mission of the School of Nursing and the core values of SIUE. 
    • Applicants must be:
      • BSN Student—currently a second semester sophomore, junior or senior nursing student
      • ABS Student—currently enrolled
      • RN to BS or MSN— currently enrolled and completed at least one semester

Scholarships Available to Graduate Students Only

  • John Louis Condellone & Flora Burgassi Condellone Award  (G)
    • To honor the lives of John and Flora Condellone by supporting a graduate student in the nurse practitioner program. 
    • Applicants must:
      • Be a first generation college student
      • Demonstrate a commitment to working with the poor
  • UI Springfield Nursing Award   (G)
    • To support graduate students enrolled in the School of Nursing program at the Springfield site. 
    • Applicants must:
      • Be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester credit hours
      • Have completed of at least 12 semester hours of the Nursing core curriculum as of the end of the most recent fall term
      • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5

Notification

Awardees will be notified by SIUE email and telephone

All awards will be applied to a student’s university charges for Fall 2009.  (If Spring 2009 is an awardee’s final semester, an award check will be processed through the Student Financial Aid Office as soon as possible.)

Scholarship and award recipients are required to attend the Scholarships and Awards Luncheon at which time the scholarships and awards will be presented.  Please contact Karen Montgomery.
