A gift in your will or trust is one of the easiest and most significant ways to leave a legacy for the SIUE School of Nursing. Your legacy gift can be for general use purposes or may be limited to scholarships, program endowments, or other dedicated funds.
Your legacy gift for the SIUE School of Nursing may be of specific assets, a specific dollar amount, or a percentage of the remainder of your estate. For example, you may desire to leave a certain percentage for the School of Nursing and the remaining percentage to be divided among family and charities.
Please call Noël Schiber, the School of Nursing Director of Development at (618) 650-3906, if you wish to discuss leaving your legacy.
Making Your Legacy Gift By Will
Your legacy gift for the School of Nursing is easily made with a will – you simply include a gift provision in your will or in an amendment (called a "codicil") to your will. You should consult with an attorney in drafting and signing your will or codicil to assure that it is valid under the law of the state in which you live. Although a will or codicil is usually valid if you move, you should confirm its continuing validity with an attorney familiar with the state laws of your new residence. The executor named by you in your will is responsible for assuring that your legacy gift is made pursuant to your instructions. A will or codicil may be changed by you at any time, with your attorney’s help.
Your legacy gift provisions are similar regardless of whether your legacy gift is by will, codicil, or trust. A legacy gift in your will for the School of Nursing’s general use purposes could be written:
I give to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Foundation, Edwardsville, Illinois or its successor [the sum of $__________ OR ___% of the residue of my estate OR all of my rights, title and interests in the following described property:__________________________], for the general use and benefit of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Nursing..
If your legacy gift establishes an endowment fund (whether for faculty, academic or other educational programs, or for scholarships), then your use of the Foundation's stipulation form is recommended. This form specifically defines your gift objective and becomes part of the Foundation's permanent record. If the stipulation form is used, the following language should be included in your will, codicil or trust:
Details for the management and administration of the endowment fund to be created by this gift are contained in the related Stipulation Agreement executed with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Foundation.
