Nursing Leadership Academy, March 20 - May 21, 2013
This is the second year of the successful Nursing Leadership Academy. The goal of this program is to expand the leadership skills of nurses in managerial/administrative positions to improve leadership effectiveness.
This is a hybrid continuing nursing education program that includes an initial full day face to face session, ten weeks of online work, and a final face to face session at the close of the offering.
Those who successfully complete all the learning activities, including the project proposal, all self-evaluations, and offering evaluations will be offered a minimum of 50 contact hours. The final award of contact hours will be calculated to include time spent developing the proposal. All continuing education evaluations for the offering will be conducted via online surveys.
Nurses who enroll in this program must have the written support of their immediate supervisors or chief nursing officers of their employing organization to ensure that their project proposal is relevant to their employing organizations.
The program faculty is Sheri Compton-McBride, MS, RN, an experienced nurse manager and School of Nursing faculty member.
Registration is limited to the first 20 registrants. Please register by February 1, 2013. Fee is $250 plus the cost of the textbook: Pat Yoder-Wise (Ed.), 2010. Leading and Managing in Nursing, 5th edition. Elsevier: St. Louis MO. The book is available through Amazon, the Elsevier website, and most bookstores and online booksellers.
The registration cost will increase in 2014.

School of Nursing's CE provider unit seeks to meet the continuing education needs for nurses in South-Central and Southern Illinois. The SON may be able to provide a program to meet your organization's need. Please contact by email Dr. Karen Kelly or by phone at 618-650-3908 if your organization has a CE need or if you would like to suggest a topic for a continuing education offering.
The 2007 Illinois Nurse Practice Act mandates 20 hours of continuing education (CE) for RNs and LPNs in order for license renewal. This mandate will begin with RN license renewal in 2012 and in 2013 for LPNs.
The requirements for RNs and LPNs are similar to those that have been in place for advanced practice nurses (APNs) in Illinois for several years, although precepting is not part of the CE plan for RNs and LPNs. (See Section 1305.100 Continuing Education: Title 68: Professions And Occupations Chapter VII: Department Of Financial And Professional Regulation for more information.)
Visit the Illinois Division of Professional Regulation, Professional Nursing Professions Licensed by DPR page to read about the new Illinois Nurse Practice Act. You can also find the current CE requirements for APNs on this web page (as noted above). Continue to review this webpage for information about the new rules for implementing the NPA. See the rules
The Illinois Center for Nursing also has information about continuing education for nurses.
Be a wise consumer of continuing education and be sure the programs for which you enroll are accredited by one of the organizations noted in the rules.
