School Nurse

The School Nurse Certification Program qualifies nurses to take the qualifying examinations offered by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to gain state certification as a school nurse (Basic Skills Exam and Type 73 School Service Personnel/School Nurse Certification Exam).  The SIUE School Nurse Program requirements are consistent with the requirements of the ISBE.  Course work required for the BSN meets many of the ISBE’s course requirements for school nurse certification.

Coursework Required for Certification

Prerequisite to the Internship (N.490)
  • Educational Psychology - EPFR 315 or EPFR 515
  • The Exceptional Child - SpEd 400

Concurrent With or Prior to the Internship (N.490)
  • Educational Foundations - EPFR 320 or EPFR 521
Those nurses with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing may register for graduate level courses, by applying to the Graduate School for admission as an unclassified graduate student.

N490: School Nurse Internship - 8 Semester Hours
This course is only offered during the spring semester.  This one semester course includes 30 hours of classroom content (usually scheduled for 6 hours on 5 Saturdays).  Interns will also complete a 45 day mentored practicum experience with an ISBE certified school nurse. Nurses already employed as a noncertified school nurse will received partial credit for hours worked during this semester.
